In recent weeks, thousands of people across south London and south-east England have signed my petition calling on NHS England to keep children's cancer services at St George's Hospital, including many parents who have told me how worried they are about this proposed closure.
Last week, NHS England launched its consultation on the future of services at St George’s Hospital and I want to make sure that we have every chance to defend and protect our local services. Keeping services at St George's is best for our patients and best for the NHS, but this can only happen with the support of people in the community who will be affected by this decision. Please spare a few minutes to complete to consultation questionnaire and share your views with the NHS. The consultation is running until Monday 18 December. See full details of the consultation here and please share this as widely as possible with friends and family here.
This morning, I've been out and about in Tooting with Wandsworth Police Officers. We've been talking to residents who are concerned about rising street drinking and anti-social behaviour.
Together we're now working to increase the number of patrols in the area and ensure that resident's concerns are being addressed. Lovely to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon with local Labour members playing rounders and enjoying a picnic.
On the 75th birthday of the NHS, I joined the amazing team at St George’s Hospital, to say, a big thank you for the incredible care and compassion they show every day. I'm proud to work side-by-side with the team.
One of the most important jobs I do as your local Member of Parliament is ensuring that our wonderful communities in Balham, Earlsfield, Furzedown, Tooting and Wandsworth Common remain safe and welcoming places to live.
To this end, I have recently hosted public meetings with local police leadership in Balham and Furzedown, conducted a walkaround with the Borough Superintendent around the local area, and written to the police on behalf of local residents on a wide range of issues. Please do let me know if you have any concerns regarding crime issues in the local area - my door is always open.
The annual BATCA Fun Day is always good fun - and this year was no exception. I was delighted to celebrate the helpers, heroes and happy Tooting residents at this wonderful community event.
It was my pleasure to open the Quirky Dovetail Market. There was such a fantastic display of local arts and crafts on sale, which demonstrated the truly incredible talents that local people have to offer.
The children's cancer centre at St George's Hospital is at risk of closure.
This is deeply concerning. The St George's children's cancer centre has more than 25 years of expertise delivering the highest quality care for patients, which will be lost if the services are moved away from Tooting. Under these plans, patients will be forced to travel to a site in central London. Parents have made it very clear that it is easier, cheaper, safer, and more comfortable to take their children to St George's. There is also a huge added cost. The plans to relocate services will cost an estimated £90 million, more than three times the cost to redevelop facilities at St George's Hospital. Today, I've launched a petition calling on the Government and NHS England to keep the children’s cancer service at St George's Hospital. Add your name and share the petition with friends and family here Today, I asked Wandsworth Police officers to join me on a walk about in Tooting Bec.
We spoke to local residents and discussed tackling anti-social behaviour in the area. I know local residents have raised a number of concerns - about incidents targeting children and public safety in the area. I addressed these matters with the police, along with strategies already put in place aimed specifically at reducing worrying incidents of this kind and crime. Over recent months, I have taken the following action on anti-social behaviour and crime on the Heaver Estate:
Tooting has so much to offer as a community and I was delighted to visit my friends in Tooting Market yesterday to talk about their businesses. From food to clothes to art, crafts and activities, there is a wonderful array of businesses in the market Next time you're in the area, make sure to pop in and sample the market's delights, whether you need freshly squeezed juice3 or freshly stitched jeans. To hear from the traders themselves (and to see me in a funky hat!). |
