As an animal lover and pet owner myself - I want the very best for all living creatures. I have long believed the UK should lead the world with high animal welfare standards. I was pleased to see the Labour Party pledge to ban exports of foie gras early on in the election campaign.
I know that many people are concerned specifically about cruelty to our greatest companions; cats, dogs and other pets. Rest assured, I will always stand against cruelty. At this election, I am standing on a manifesto to improve animal welfare. Labour has pledged to ban trail hunting and the import of hunting trophies. We will end the scourge of puppy smuggling and farming, along with the use of snare traps. Most of all, we will partner with scientists, industry, and civil society as we work towards the phasing out of animal testing. Many people have got in touch with me recently about the Government’s proposed ban on electric shock collars for dogs. As an animal lover myself, it is my firm belief that the UK should lead the world in animal welfare standards which would mean no animal would be made to endure unnecessary suffering.
All pets deserve the utmost protection, and I’m pleased that the legislation introduced has been approved by the House of Lords. However, I’m also pleased that there will be an exemption for those with protected characteristics who have a legitimate need to use collars that produce sounds, vibrations, and other non-shock signals.
