Today I met with the Prison Officers Assocation from Wandsworth Prison and Battersea and Wandsworth TUC to discuss the brutal conditions officers face.
They told me about appalling conditions with three assaults on staff every day. This simply can’t go on - the Govt must get a grip on the crisis in our prisons. At the start of August I hosted GMB Southern in Parliament.
Unions play such a crucial role in supporting workers and ensuring our workplaces maintain the highest standards for safety, pay and conditions. I really enjoyed talking to the staff about the work they do: representing individuals and groups, helping people through disputes, and pushing for legislative change that keeps the UK’s workplaces reflective of our values and aspirations. If you haven’t already: join a union – they are there for you.
London UNISON members have fought hard for some amazing victories over the last year. I was proud to meet with some of our fantastic reps working in local healthcare when I addressed UNISON’s conference last month.
Today, Justin Madders MP and I met with the Retail trade union Usdaw and a group of retail workers in Westminster to talk about how the cost-of-living crisis, rising violence and abuse in stores, and the impact of Christmas holiday trade is affecting the mental health of customers and colleagues.
Far too many people are facing this Christmas period worried about how to provide for their families. With so many Usdaw members having their mental health impacted as a result of the cost-of-living crisis and increased levels of abuse in the workplace, it is deeply important that we, as politicians, take the time to listen. |
