What a fantastic evening at the 54th Bal Polski, an event that beautifully celebrates vibrant Polish culture and its immense contribution to Britain.
The ball raises vital funds for charity, showcasing the wonderful generosity and spirit of the community. As the proud daughter of a Polish mum, being there was an absolute privilege and held deep personal meaning for me. In my role as Co-Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Poland, I see time and again the positive impact Polish people have right across our country. Last night was a powerful reminder of the rich and historic bonds that connect our two nations, and it was an honour to be part of such a special celebration.
The UK's multicultural society is one of our country's greatest triumphs, a source of immense strength and pride. Here in Tooting, our vibrant and diverse communities are the heart of what makes our area so special, enriching us all.
When we witness the vile killing of protestors, like those seen in the United States, it serves as a horrifying reminder that progress is never guaranteed and must always be defended. We must stand together against the politics of division and hate wherever it emerges. As I argued on ITV's Peston last night, our inclusivity is an incredible asset. I will always champion the tolerant, open, and vibrant society that embodies the very best of Britain and which we must never take for granted. Our differences do not divide us; they make our country stronger.
In a world facing increasing geopolitical instability, the partnership between the United Kingdom and Poland has never been more vital. It was a great honour to be re-elected today as Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Poland. Poland has shown extraordinary leadership on the front line of European security, providing unwavering support to its Ukrainian neighbours and welcoming millions of refugees with incredible generosity.
I am proud to continue my work with colleagues across Parliament to deepen the bonds of friendship, security, and cooperation between our two great nations at this crucial time for our continent. The reports emerging from Iran are truly harrowing. Thousands of brave individuals have been killed for simply demanding their fundamental human rights. The courage of those on the streets is incredibly inspiring.
World leaders have a moral duty to hold the Iranian regime to account for these atrocities. We must stand unequivocally with those courageously fighting for their freedom and for a future free from tyranny. Greenland is not a piece of property to be traded on a whim, like moving pieces on a Monopoly board. It is the home of a people, with a unique culture, history, and a fundamental right to self-determination. For the people of Greenland, Trump's rhetoric must be deeply insulting.
Leaders in the UK and across Europe must stand firm, upholding international law and making it clear that such disgraceful politics has no place in the modern world. The scenes of senseless violence from Bondi were utterly appalling and my heart goes out to all those affected.
Today, I took my daughters to Australia House to sign the book of condolence. It was our opportunity to pay respects and stand in solidarity with the victims, their families, and the entire community. In the face of such unimaginable tragedy, we must always stand united against vile hatred and antisemitism. Love will always triumph over prejudice. The UN backing our calls to integrate mental health support with care for non-communicable diseases is a landmark moment. I have always campaigned tirelessly for parity of esteem between physical and mental health.
Earlier this year, I worked with legislators globally to produce a report on this very issue. I am incredibly proud that our collaborative campaigning has culminated in an UN resolution backing our recommendations. I have today raised the case of the Palestine Action hunger strikers in Parliament, asking David Lammy, the Justice Secretary, to provide an update on their condition.
The scenes from Bondi today are utterly appalling, especially on what should be a day of joy for Jewish communities worldwide. This senseless violence is devastating. My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected by this horrific attack.
The reports emerging from Sudan detailing massacres and other atrocities are utterly horrifying. This senseless violence against innocent civilians demands an immediate and robust response from the global community. As a nation, we cannot simply stand by.
The UK must work urgently with partners to protect civilians and secure humanitarian access for those in desperate need. I will continue to press for an end to the bloodshed and to ensure aid reaches the vulnerable. |
