What a fantastic summer of sport we’ve been treated to! I was lucky to be able to experience the absolutely electric atmosphere at Wembley as the Lionesses roared to an inspirational victory which was one of many sensational memories from the tournament, from Russo’s backheel to Toone’s winner, I know so many young girls will be inspired to continue the wonderful legacy left by this team. The Commonwealth Games have also had a more local hero. Eden Cheng won a silver medal in the 10m synchro platform competition along with Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix. Eden is a brilliant example of our community producing talented athletes, and I am sure many will aspire to reach Eden’s success. Congratulations to Eden, and all the medal winners at the Games! Tooting Bec Athletics Track reopened this summer after a successful community campaign against its closure. It was great to be at their official reopening along with local Councillor Judi Gasser.
It was great to meet some young athletes and see the wide range of facilities that they offer, including a seven-a-side football pitch, an eight lane track, and a state of the art fitness centre. I am so grateful we have this brilliant resource on our doorstep in Tooting. The fantastic facilities at Tooting Bec Athletics Track will be vital in helping Tooting’s children become the Olympians of tomorrow. I have no doubt that future Team GB medalists are already training here and I look forward to seeing what they all go on to achieve. Yesterday, my friend Rex Osborn was elected to Wandsworth Council for Tooting Broadway with a whopping 62% of the vote!
Rex has been a constant in my political life – he was the Labour leader on the council when I was elected in 2014 and I served as his deputy. Rex was the one who urged me to run for selection as an MP and has been with me every step of the way since. Tooting has gained a fantastic voice on the council, who will prioritise our town centres, ensure a fairer deal for renters and push for increased cost-of-living support. This election took place under tragic circumstances, following the sad passing of Councillor Andy Gibbons, who served this area faithfully for 28 years. However, I could not think of a better person to represent Tooting in the Town Hall in Andy’s stead and I look forward to working closely with Rex to honour Andy’s legacy. |
