Closing the digital divide

11/2/2021

At such an unprecedented time, many families locally are unable to access the necessary technology for children to learn from home.

I have been working hard to address this issue in our community. The Government is not doing enough, and so we need businesses to step up wherever they can to donate laptops so children can continue to learn and flourish.

Thanks to a generous donation from Henley Homes, I was so pleased to offer two laptops to every primary school in Tooting to help with their online learning.

Teachers and school teams are doing a phenomenal job, and I know that digital poverty is a real worry for them, as well as for  families across Tooting. Early on in the pandemic, Labour called for a set of measures that would see a mass roll-out of devices and internet access to students currently struggling to learn online, alongside steps such as ‘zero-rating’ of educational websites to ensure data charges are not putting barriers on access to education during lockdown.

The digital divide risks failing a generation. I am so pleased to have been able to help close this gap.
