Clean Up Tooting

The Council are not taking the issue of littering and fly-tipping seriously enough. This is why I consulted with local residents and we've come up with five proposals which will help make our streets cleaner and greener. These are:

Better street cleaning
CCTV in hot-spots
Under pavement bins
Phone box removal
Improved communication

I am increasingly shocked at the level of rubbish in the Tooting area. I really applaud Dr Rosena Allin-Khan challenging the council to do something about it. The problem is so bad I think there need to be wider ranging measures to tackle it.

These would include:

Ensuring public bins are emptied more often, these are often overflowing.
A local advertising campaign or door drop to raise awareness of how to put your rubbish out without it being attacked by foxes.
A local campaign should also highlight a zero tolerance to littering in the borough.
Provide a place you can report problem households or properties, so they can be fined.
Multi-language literature on when the rubbish needs to go out and how to deal with it so that everyone can engage.
A deep clean of the area to tackle the increasing amount of broken glass that gathers in corners of the street.
Better recycling facilities where food waste is collected separately, reducing the amount of bin bags that will be investigated and torn open by foxes.
Better ways of catching dog owners who don't pick up their dog's mess. Also a big problem in the area.

I have a whole series of photographs highlighting some of the issues in the area which I would be happy to discuss, along with further thoughts on the scale at which this issue needs to be dealt with.
