Free England tickets for schools

27/3/2018

I wrote to all local primary schools this month, encouraging them to take part in Sports Relief, with the promise of England football tickets to the top three schools which raised the most money for charity.

After an excellent effort from a number of schools, I am happy to announce the winners: Rutherford House School, Sellincourt School and Furzedown Primary School.

Thank you to the FA for donating the tickets, and well done to the winners!

The Daily Mile Launch

This week, I was honoured to be invited to Manchester to speak at a round-table on how to tackle inequality in sport, and to celebrate the launch of the new healthy living initiative – The Daily Mile.

A number of sporting organisations, including National Governing Bodies, and representatives from a collection of charities, came together to discuss how to tackle gender, race, and disability inequalities within physical activity and sport. There were fantastic suggestions on the positive steps that both the Government and local communities can take to ensure that everyone has the opportunity, and resources, to access and enjoy sport.

To commemorate the launch, myself and Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, took on the challenge of walking The Daily Mile. This new initiative asks primary schools to encourage children to run, walk, or jog for at least 15 minutes a day. With nearly a third of children between 2- 15 years classed as overweight, making sure that our children are getting enough exercise is paramount.

Manchester is the world’s first City Region committed to The Daily Mile and with 43% of primary schools in Greater Manchester already signed up, we're looking to re-engineer activity back into our lifestyles.

For more information on The Daily Mile please find details here:  thedailymile.co.uk

This simple change can make a huge difference to the health and well-being of our future generations.

It was my pleasure to attend the 'Tooting Goes to Bollywood' fundraiser last night at the Memon Centre in Balham. It was an incredible night that was put on by our own members, which I greatly enjoyed.

The food was fantastic, there was excellent Bollywood dancing, a fashion show and we were even joined by Sadiq Khan. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.

International Women's Day 2018

It was my pleasure to celebrate International Women’s Day this week. It has been 100 years since some women were first given the vote, and it’s important to mark the progress we’ve made since then, as well as looking forward to the challenges we still need to overcome.

On 6th March I was joined by a group of inspirational Tooting women in Parliament to discuss how we can ensure that we are fairly represented at work, in society and across the world. With guest speakers Stella Creasy MP and Alison McGovern MP, it was a day to celebrate the fabulous businesses, charities and other organisations that we have in Tooting who continue to champion local women.

I also had the pleasure of visiting Streatham and Clapham High School and Burntwood School, where I spoke to ambitious young women about the opportunities available and the importance of perseverance. I firmly believe that the only limits you have are the ones you place on yourself, and it was fantastic to see these young women take in that message.

International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate, but also to reflect, and I hope that on International Women’s Day 2019, we’ll have continued our progress towards a society that is fairer and more equal for all.

#Watergate

On Sunday morning, thousands of residents across Tooting and Balham woke up without water in their properties. For many, including myself, this is still the case.

To ensure that Thames Water recognises the scale of the problem, I have been passing on details of each road affected and have been encouraging residents to share their stories with me on social media. Working throughout the night on Sunday, I was pleased to secure a bottled water site in the car park of Balham Sainsbury's and passed on information of any vulnerable residents who needed water delivered to their properties.

Unfortunately, earlier today, a water pipe burst on Tooting High Street, closing off the road south of Tooting Broadway station. Several businesses around the Broadway have been affected and are temporarily closed, but all businesses on Tooting High Street are still open for business so please continue to shop local. Thames Water are currently on site identifying the extent of the problem and I will continue to have regular updates to assess the impact on local residents and businesses.
