Today, I voted against the Government’s Bill on welfare reforms.
I believe there is scope to reform the current welfare system and I am supportive of various aspects of the Government's proposals, such as allowing people to try working without losing out. I also welcome the concessions made by the Government and will follow the legislation carefully at the next reading. While much of what the Government has announced in recent days - and indeed today - is welcome, the Bill as it is remains the same and has not been amended yet. I want to see an amended Bill before deciding whether it is possible to support it. The next vote is next week and I will follow it closely. Yesterday, I was delighted to join CEN for their Healing our Broken Village Black Mental Health Conference at the New Testament Assembly church in Tooting.
With continued racial disparities in sectioning and the use of community treatment orders, more must be done to bring about much-needed change. I wish everyone in Tooting and beyond a peaceful and blessed Eid. My thoughts and prayers are especially with all those facing hardship and suffering at this time.
Making Wandsworth a greener and cleaner borough was a key policy in our campaign in the 2022 local elections, which is why I'm delighted that the new Labour administration in the Town Hall have now rolled out food waste recycling bins across the local area.
This morning, I invited residents from Tooting to share a cup of tea and a biscuit at my local coffee morning. As the local MP, I am here to help and my door is always open.
Every corner of Wandsworth thrives with culture and creativity. Our art, food and history are what makes our community great.
That's why I'm so proud that Wandsworth has been selected as London's Borough of Culture in 2025. Thanks to everyone who has worked to make this happen.
Sending my best wishes to everyone in Tooting and around the world. I hope you have a blessed Ramadan.
Special thoughts and prayers going to Palestinians and all Muslims around the world enduring hardship and suffering at this time. This week marks International Women’s Day. It’s a time to celebrate all the brilliant women who make our community, the incredible place it is.
Today, I brought together a group of fantastic leading women in business and community organisations. Their stories were inspiring and shows what women can do when we support each other. There is a disused council site on Swaffield Road which I want to see converted into a pocket park for local families. I was overwhelmed by the support that this plan has received. The petition has now been submitted to the council and will be reviewed.
