Brexit Debate

31/5/2018

This week in Parliament I took part in a debate on our future trading relationship with the European Union.

We are being told day-in, day-out that leaving the EU is going to make us worse off, businesses will be hampered, jobs will be harmed and our rights will be watered down.

I campaigned and voted to Remain in the EU Referendum, I voted against triggering Article 50, and have continuously supported measures to protect workers' rights, safeguard environmental standards and ensure the rights of EU nationals living in the UK.

I will continue to stand-up for Tooting residents by making it clear that we must seek to stay in a Customs Union. The Cabinet has reached a stalemate with the Government being held to ransom by arch-Brexiteers who want to see us crash out of Europe.

I want you to know that I won't hesitate to vote against a final deal that makes Tooting, and the UK, worse off.

We’re being told day-in, day-out that leaving the EU is going to make us worse off; businesses will be hampered, jobs will be harmed and our rights will be watered down.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting representatives from Homeless Health, Balham Nursery and Children’s Centre, and Home Start.

I am proud to support the partnership between these three wonderful organisations, which will make a real difference to our community.

Southern Rail Timetable Change

14/5/2018

Since being elected, I have made improving transport in Tooting a priority, from campaigning for Crossrail 2 to Tooting Broadway to bringing longer trains to Earlsfield Station.

Many local residents have contacted me with concerns that their commutes would be disrupted by the Southern Rail timetable changes. School children and commuters have seen their journey times increase, particularly those who travel to South East London.

I do not believe that Southern Rail have done enough to consult with rail users, particularly young people travelling to school. That is why I have contacted them to share local residents' concerns that fares are continuing to rise and delays are commonplace. Rail users deserve better and I am continuing to push for the Mayor of London to take over the franchise.

Thames Water Compensation

8/5/2018

Like many Tooting residents, I woke up on 4th March to find that I had no water supply in my home.

The response from Thames Water was poor - were it not for the hundreds of people who contacted me on social media, there would have been little coordination of the response, including ensuring that the most vulnerable members of the community had access to water.

The disruption to schools, care homes,  and local people was huge - that’s why I held a meeting with Thames Water where they agreed to pay £150 to everybody who was without water for 48 hours or more. I also held a site visit with Thames Water management to speak to affected businesses and constituents.

However, it quickly has become apparent that Thames Water’s data is inaccurate; residents who had no water, or very low pressure, received far less compensation than they were entitled to. I have written to the CEO of Thames Water on behalf of everyone who contacted me to ask that they review their compensation package.

I am still awaiting a full response from Thames Water, however so far, nearly 100 constituents have received additional payments. Given the huge profits made by Thames Water, I will continue to work to ensure that residents’ interests are put first.

Election Day

4/5/2018

Yesterday was Election Day in Tooting, as Wandsworth went to the polls for the local elections.

We ran an excellent campaign that worked right up to 10pm last night, speaking to voters across Tooting. The result was Labour’s best result in 30 years in Wandsworth. Together we got 26 Labour Councillors elected, won the popular vote, and came within 141 votes of winning control of the Council.

I am disappointed that we didn’t take the Council this time, especially because we had candidates who would have made great Councillors but missed out by desperately small margins. Nevertheless, we should be proud of what we achieved in Wandsworth.

On behalf of everyone in Tooting Labour, I want to thank everyone who knocked on a door, phoned a member, delivered a leaflet, or helped in the office during the campaign. You should be proud of the campaign you were a part of.
