Transition Town Tooting Meeting

28/4/2017

There are many wondering and hard working organisations in Tooting. Transition Town Tooting being one of them.

I had the honour of attending their annual meeting this evening and heard about 18 of their projects. I was so impressed to see so many passionate people in the room talking about what had been achieved over the past year.
I look forward to continuing to support them.

Thank you to Burntwood School for inviting me to speak at their awards ceremony this evening.

Students and staff have been outstanding again this past year. All should be proud of themselves and all they have achieved as individuals and as a whole school.

Schools Funding Cuts

25/4/2017

This evening I spoke at an event run by the NUT at Furzedown Primary School against the Conservative Government proposed school funding cuts.

Wandsworth school's are set to lose £15 million in funding. This is not acceptable. I have been and will continue to campaign against these cuts.

My children, and your children deserve more than the Conservative Government are offering them.

I met with the Minister for Early Years earlier this year with three Head Teachers; I had hoped our conversation around funding may have had some sway in the Conservative Government reversing plans to make these cuts.

Today, the Prime Minister called a General Election. After spending her time in office stating she would not call an early election, she has.

I will be seeking re-election and hope to have the opportunity to continue with the job I was elected to do just 10 months go.

I have written to the Foreign Secretary about recent events in Syria. Having worked for a number of years with refugees in humanitarian disasters before entering Parliament, I am assured that now is the time to act. We must not be governed by fear, but by what is right and wrong.

Statement on Ken Livingstone

5/4/2017

Ken Livingstone was found guilty of very serious allegations and the punishment did not reflect their severity. Ken Livingstone should not be a member of the Labour Party, he should have been expelled.

To be clear, I believe anyone found guilty of discriminatory abuse, whether it be racism, sexism, homophobia or other forms, should face expulsion from the Labour Party. People who hold these views do not represent the Labour movement, they do not represent my politics - they have no place in the Labour Party.

More than ever, the Labour Party needs to take a lead and take a zero-tolerance approach towards anti-Semitism. I shall do whatever I can in my power to ensure the Labour Party rule book reflects a zero-tolerance stance towards discriminatory behaviour.

Tackling Sexism in Football

3/4/2017

As Shadow Minister for Sport and a keen football fan, I was dismayed at recent sexist comments made by Sunderland AFC manager David Moyes towards BBC reporter Vicki Sparkes.

Having worked as both doctor and a politician, I know how difficult it can be working in male-dominated environments. If we as a society fail to take action when individuals in senior positions make sexist comments, it provides legitimacy to these comments. This is particularly concerning taking into account the number of young girls and boys who look up to sports stars as role models.

It is time to level out the playing field and tackle sexism, from the Premier League to Sunday league.
