Plastic waste is one of the most pressing environmental issues we face, both here in Tooting and globally.
According to research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, up to 13m tonnes of plastic finds its way into the world’s oceans each year to be eaten by sealife, and by 2050 the oceans will contain more plastic by weight than fish. These numbers are staggering and show that anything we can do to reduce our plastic waste production here in Tooting is valuable.
I want Tooting to become plastic straw free, so I'm asking local bars and pubs to pledge that they will replace their plastic straws with paper ones. Local people can also pledge to go plastic straw free when they visit bars and pubs that still use them.
We all have a responsibility to protect the environment, and this is a small change that can make a big difference.
