My thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident at Manchester Central Mosque yesterday evening during Ramadan prayers. Thanks to the police for their swift response. We're still waiting for all the facts to emerge but we must do more to stem the rising tide of Islamophobia
Today marks four years since Russia's barbaric full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
In the terrifying early weeks, I travelled to Ukraine with MedGlobal to provide training on mass casualty triage. Drawing on my experience as a humanitarian doctor, I taught Ukrainian medics who showed sheer determination to save lives under constant bombardment. Their bravery was humbling. Their fight for freedom and sovereignty is a fight for us all. Our support must remain steadfast and unwavering. Britain must stand in complete solidarity with Ukraine.
Today, as Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, many in our community will start a period of reflection, sacrifice, and growth. This is a deeply personal time for so many; a chance to pause and focus on what truly matters. To everyone observing over the coming weeks, I wish you a peaceful and spiritually fulfilling Lenten season. Ramadan Mubarak to everyone in Tooting and across the country observing this holy month. This is a sacred time for deep reflection, prayer, and fasting, but it is also a period that powerfully demonstrates the importance of community and compassion. The spirit of generosity seen during Ramadan truly epitomises the very best of our values here in Tooting. Parliament may be in recess, but life on the NHS frontline never stops. This morning, I was back in my scrubs for an early shift in our local A&E. Amidst the rough and tumble of politics, these shifts keep me grounded and connected to the realities people face every day. The challenges in our health service are not abstract debates; they are real-life struggles for patients and the dedicated staff caring for them.
Serving my community, both on the green benches in Westminster and in the emergency department, is an immense privilege. My experiences on the ward directly inform my work as an MP. It is a powerful reminder of why fighting for an NHS with the resources to look after us all is so important. What a wonderful celebration for the first anniversary of JK Karate Academy in Tooting. Our community is made stronger by organisations like this, and it was a privilege to present awards to the dedicated students. Their focus and commitment were truly inspiring to witness. This event held a special significance for me. Learning martial arts as a girl was a transformative experience, instilling a sense of self-belief that has been crucial throughout my life, from the A&E frontline to my work in Parliament. It teaches young people to face life's challenges with courage and resilience. A huge congratulations to the instructors and students at JK Karate Academy for a brilliant first year. Keep up the fantastic and empowering work Lunar New Year is a time of vibrant celebration for our East and Southeast Asian communities here in Tooting and across the country. This year, we welcome the Year of the Fire Horse. The incredible energy and beautiful traditions on display are a testament to the rich cultural diversity that makes our community so wonderfully special.
My warmest wishes go out to everyone celebrating for a year ahead filled with immense joy, success, and, most importantly, good health.
Being re-elected as an officer of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Patient Safety is a tremendous honour. As an A&E doctor, I have seen first-hand the devastating consequences when things go wrong and the critical importance of robust safety standards in preventing harm. Every patient deserves to feel safe and confident in the care they receive.
Bringing my frontline experience directly into Parliament, I will continue to champion measures that make our health service safer for everyone. We must always learn from mistakes and strive for the highest possible standards in our precious NHS.
Labour-run Wandsworth Council has decided to freeze Council Tax for a fourth consecutive year!
This decisive action means that local people will continue to pay the lowest Council Tax in the country, providing much-needed stability and relief. This freeze is a powerful example of Labour in power delivering tangible support for our communities. It shows a clear commitment to putting residents first, proving that the council and Wandsworth Labour are on your side.
